The total number of boys at school in 1367 was 2,387, this was an increase of 304 boys over
those attending school in the previous year. At the beginning of the school year, in October 1948,
about 600 boys had to be refused admission owing to lack of space. Their names were registered for
admission at the beginning of the next term or when additional class rooms were added to the schools.
Preference in admission was given to Bahrain subjects though the schools are open to boys of all
nationalities.
Most of the candidates for school were from the three towns, Manama, Muharraq and Hedd.
For some days before and after the opening date the school buildings were surrounded by an army of
6mall boys, ranging in age from 4 to 10 years, escorted by fathers or mothers, friends and relations,
or persons who might be thought suitable mediators, capable of persuading the authorities to accept
them.
Two new infant schools, such as the one which was opened in Muhanuq in 1366, with some
additional class rooms to the school at Hedd, would probably accommodate all the children in the towns
who at present want to be educated. In the villages there is not a great demand for education. The
country people are less advanced than those in the towns; in some respects they appear to be about a
