years. This welcome slate of affairs may be attributed to a stricter watch being maintained at
all points of entry and the increase in the vaccination state of the population. More than
23,000 local people were vaccinated during the year in a drive which embraced the Islands and
a further 8,020 in respect of those travellers arriving without certificates.
Certificates of vaccinations against Smallpox were required from arrivals from all countries,
Cholera Certificates in the ease of travellers from Pakistan and India and Yellow Fever Certifi
cates from those coming from delineated Yellow Feter endemic areas.
The Mecca Pilgrimage of the 1371 Ilegria (A.D. 1952).—The number of pilgrims passing
through Bahrain was 1,352 compared with about 3,000 last year. Just over half came by air
and the rest by sea. All were free from infection and possessed the required vaccination
certificates. Medical care was provided at the Government Hospital and accommodation in
the Orphanage was made available for sea passengers awaiting onward transport. Air
passengers did not stop over in Bahrain.

Conclusion.—Bahrain, on the whole, cannot be said to be an unduly unhealthy place.
Cholera, Plague and Smallpox have disappeared, the incidence of Malaria has been greatly
reduced and Typhoid and other bowel diseases have declined. But the present method of
collecting vital statistics has not )ct reached the stage of recording every birth and death, with
its cause, that occurs on the Island and without this essential information, it is not possible to
appraise correctly the health of the inhabitants.
