separated ; Rs. 11,800 was recovered from old debts, due to estates. The sum was small in comparison
to last year's figures because many of the debts were diving debts and owing to a bad season most of the
people who owed the money were unable to make any repayment.
The department disbursed Rs. 72,800 in allowances, maintenances, etc., at one time during the
year .}8i persons were drawing allowances; 69 persons took over control of their own affairs upon
attaining their majority. One garden, at Sitra, was bought, but on the whole it was found more
profitable to invest money in loans than to buy property at the present high price. During the year
Rs. 58,000 were spent upon improving and repairing property and in building two houses, forletting, in
Ras Romaan. Withdrawals by people attaining majority, marriage expenses, and the payment of debts
against certain estates amounted to Rs. 1,45,000. Loans advanced during the year were Rs. 6,69,000

LAND DEPARTMENT
(From the report by Khan Sahib Mohomcd Khalil Mcmon, Superintendent.)
Land Registration.—The total number of registrations during the year was S07 consisting of
426 sales, 92 gifts and 289 titles. Registration fees collected on these transactions amounted to
Rs. 57,112 which was about Rs. 4,000 less than the previous year’s collections and about Rs. 3,000
below the amount anticipated in the budget.
The value of the property which was sold during the year was Rs. 17,41,000; this was about
Rs. 1,10,000 less than the value of sales in 1366. The difference corresponded, more or less, to the
difference between the amount realised by sales of land by the Government in 1366 and 1367. The
market value of land showed no appreciable difference throughout the year. The price of land in
Manama town continued to be excessively high.
Prominent Sales.—The following important sales took place during the year:—
A stone house of medium size in Feriq al Fadl, Manama, sold for Rs. 70,000.
An amara in Feriq Bu Sirra, a poor locality and an indifferent building, Rs. So,000.
A house in Feriq Awadia, Rs. 35.000.
A house in Feriq al Fadl, consisting of a ground floor building opposite the American Mission,
Rs. 36,000.
A house on the western end of the sea front, a two-storied stone building, adjacent to Haj
Khalil Kanoo’s office, Rs. 65,000.
Government land to the value of Rs. 40,000 was sold during the year. Most of the sales were
building plots on one of the new roads lying between Palace Road and Belgrave Road. This area on
which a number of straight wide roads have been laid out is being developed as a residential area.
Altogether seven plots have been sold on one of the new roads and houses have been built on two of
them. These building sites are sold at Re. 1 per square foot.
