ELECTRICITY AND STATE ENGINEER'S DEPARTMENT
(By Mr. Donald Brammer, State Engineer.)
During the year under review the operations of the department were directed by Group
Captain Leigh, who, however, left shortly before this report became due.
Electricity Department—Power Station.—The existing plant was kept in service and a
policy of conserving its life was adopted with the idea of maintaining a restricted electricity supply
until the new machinery on order arrived.
The peak load carried was the highest on record. Accurate figures, however, are not available
owing to the lack of efficient metering equipment in the Power Station, so that these records are
computed on a similar basis to previous years.
No. 5 Generating Set.—Was installed and put into commission during the year and carried
a large proportion of the load particularly during the hot weather.
No. 4 Generating Set.—Which has been carrying the major portion of the load for some
time continued to give satisfactory service.
Nos. 1 & 2 Seta.—Continued to operate on their rather inefficient basis, however, instead of
removing them as planned last year they will now be overhauled and kept in use until such time as
the capacity of the Power Station is sufficient to take care of all the load connected.
Two small sets of 55 KW rating were purchased and installed during the year. These were
used during peak load periods owing to the delayed arrival of No. 6 Set and had very little running.
They will be disposed of as soon as sufficient plant is in commission.
No. 6 Set.—Has now arrived and the preparation of its concrete bed on the site of No. 3 Set
is proceeding satisfactorily with the aid of a newly acquired Air Compressor and concrete breaking
equipment.
Water Distillation Plant.—The erection of this new, 10 tons per day plant, is now almost
completed and it will shortly be put into commission.
Transmission and Distribution Mains.—Maintenance of the overhead lines has demanded
constant attention and no new work of major proportions was carried out with the exception of an
underground LT service to the new water Pumping Station where 3-15 HP electricity driven water
pumps were installed by the contractors.
Meter Department.—The new meter testing equipment has now arrived and is being installed.
Financial Position.—Owing to the need for conservation of the generating plant, the Revenue
returns were lower than necessary to show a profit. For example, quite an appreciable loss of revenue
occurred owing to the shutting down of some circuits at night and others during the day time.
New Load Connected.—Additional connections during the year amounted to 132.000 KW
as compared with 83.700 during 1366. Details are as follows :—
1. Lights, Fans and Plugs 98*640 KW.
2. Power 20*717 „
3. Refrigerators I* 080 „
4. Air Conditioning .. 11-563 ..

Total at the end of 1366 1385-000 „
