                             CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT
(Report by Mr. G. W. R. Smith, Director of Customs and Port Officer).
The revenue collected by the Customs Department from all sources, including boat licences,
exceeded last year’s revenue by Rs. 10,66,000 and exceeded the amount which was anticipated in
the Budget by Rs. 19,45,000. This large increase in customs revenue was to a great extent due to the
quantity of imports of commodities on which the higher rates of duty are charged. Invoice prices
on these goods showed a rise in prices of up to 10 per cent in value. Two other factors which contributed
to the high revenue were the increased activities of the Petroleum Concessions Ltd., and the success
of the “ in transit" system. Receipts from Direct Transhipment cargo amounting to more than
twice the sum which was collected in 1366 and duties from “ in transit ” cargo were almost 2 lakhs
higher than in the previous year.
