                           C92A. In Juno 1904 Major Grey submitted a proposal for providing a
                                                      new  building for tho dispensary and
                         Exterunl A., November 1901. Nob. 58-59.
                                                      hospital at Maskat. Ho thought that a
                        subscription of Its. 10,000 could be easily collected at Maskat, and proposed,
                        if tho idea is approved, to ask tho Sultan to give us tho sito on which the
                        present buildings aro situated. Tho Government of India saw no objection to
                        the proposal, provided the loan and hospital questions wore kept distinct.
                            G92B. In January 1905 Major Grey submitted a list of subscriptions for
                                                      t he proposed hospital amounting to Us.

                                                      0,450, and proposed that the Government
                        of India should offer Rs. 10,000 or Its. 15,0u0 in aid of the movement, in
                        which case more subscriptions would be forthcoming and tho Sultan would
                        “ give way n as to tho site required.
                           The Government of India replied as follows in their letter to Major Cox
                        (No. 12SS-E. 13., dated 29th March 1905)
                           " In r«*p*y I am to say that this not. a suitable manner in which to put forward such a
                        scheme. Major Grey should be informed that until satisfactory ovidence has been adduced
                        that the Sultan desires the hospital and will support it, and that tho local community, Arab9
                        and Indians, are prepared both io found and maintain the institution, it is useless to apply to
                        the Government of india, who already maiutain a dispensary and surgeon at Alaskat.
                                     (ii) Agency Establishment, Maskat, 1901-1902.
                            693. The establishment of the Maskat Agency as finally sanctioned in
                                                      Foreign Department No. 91-E. A., dated
                            External H., February 1901, Nob. 28-31.

                            694. The late Munshi who combined in himself the offices of Arabic
                                                      clerk, Interpreter and Shroff died in 1901.

                                                      He had settled for good in Maskat and
                        did not care for promotion o1sewhe.ro. There was, however, much difficulty
                        to secure on the salary of Us. 75 a suitable man to take his place and at the
                        suggestion of Major Cox the pay of the appointment was raised from
                        Rs. 75 to Rs. 100 with l!s. 25 as shroff allowance (Foreign Department letter
                        No. 674-E. A., dated 15th April 1903).
                        (iii) Residential quarters for the Ageuoy Surgeon and Agency Clerical establish­
                                         ments and Telegraph Office at Maskat.
                            095. In his letter No. 13, dated 6th January 1902, Captain Cox brought
                                                      to the notice of Government the great

                                                      inconvenience of tho arrangement under
                        which tho Agency surgeon had his residential quarters at Matrah, an arrange­
                        ment which had existed for 20 years, and suggested that tho quarters should
                        be provided at Maskat for the successor of Colonel Jayakar.       _
