      NOTE ON TRANSLITERATION

The transliteration of Arabic words in this study originally followed
the system adopted in the second edition of the encyclopaedia
of islam (except in the ease of place names that have a generally
accepted form in English), with the following alterations:
                          C, is transliterated thus: j
                          i3 is transliterated thus: q
                            is transliterated thus: z

For the sake of simplicity, however, I have dropped the diacritical
marks, apart from the ‘ayn (*) and the hamzah (’), in all but
      Appendix i and the bibliography.
