The governor wrote to Saqr, who, afraid of showing any signs
defiance, gave his permission.26 Reassured, the sons of Sultan
proceeded to Wakrah in Qatar, where they were joined by armed
men of the Qubaysat and sailed for Dalma. On learning that
his nephews had reached the island, Saqr prepared a fleet to pursue
them27 and put his son Dhiyab in command. The force made
for Sir Bani Yas, an island twenty miles away, in order to gain
access to Dalma; but the night before Dhiyab reached Sir Bani
Yas, Shakhbut and Hazza‘, on the advice of the residents of the
island,28 who were not prepared to become involved in the family
feud, went back to Qatar. At a loss to do any more, they then
travelled on to Riyadh, to meet with I bn Sa‘ud.29
In the meantime, Saqr was facing dissension from his family
at home, and tried to keep control by means of murder. His
animosity was directed principally at his brothers Khalifah and
Muhammad, who had the support of the Al-bu-Sha‘r section of
the Manasir, who had wanted Khalifah to be ruler.30 When Khalifah
realised the extent of Saqr’s enmity, he skilfully manoeuvred his
demise. Since he had no intention of gaming the shaykhdom for
himself, he sent word to his exiled nephews to go to Shaqah
and to send him a Baluchi slave. When the slave amved KhalTah
