       ‘barasti’ huts declined from 2% to nil. There was also ‘a spectacular
       increase in the proportion of employees’ houses with electricity and
       running water from 36% in 1962 to 81% in 1968’. Obviously such
       developments affect the appearance of the environment — not only is
       there the appearance of power lines but quarrying has increased in
       importance and there has been the establishment of cement plants.
         The oil industry of the Gulf area acts as a lure to many people in
