I.
The Route of the Pilgrims from Cairo to Mecca *.
The noble assemblage (mahhfil sherif) having issued
from Cairo (Misr) with great pomp, proceeds to the
Birket-cl-hajj (pilgrims’ pool), and thence to the Hid-
fet-el-bowei'b (hamlet of the little gate), a narrow place
between two hills, with an elevation and a long hill on
the right. Thence to
Hamra (the red), where there are cisterns, and
lodges (fiskiyeh), built for the use of the pilgrims.
Thence to
Nakhil ghanem (sheep-palm grove). Thence to
Birkeh ’Ajerud (pool of ’Ajerud), the first watering-
place: its water is sweet, and sometimes is running
through the valley. There is a khan (inn) there
built by K&nsu Ghauri, and three lodges (fiskiyeh).
It is opposite to the port of Suwcis (Suez), and in the
same direction as the ’Ayun Musdf (springs of Moses).
