My story starts in 1516,
the year that I, Bartholomew Ainsley Livingstone,
was born. I was a common pauper who lived the first
six years of my life in the streets of Paris, living off
of scraps of food found in garbages behind taverns.
My mother died of a common plague before my sev-
enth birthday. I was on my own for a month or so,
sleeping in horse sheds and stealing from bakeries
and fishermen’s traps. Eventually, I was caught by one
of these fishermen, and was nearly thrown into the
ocean when his wife ran from inside their home and
stopped him. Seeing me in such a state, the woman
begged her husband to let me go, and instead let me
into their home for
a meal and a night’s
stay. A night turned
into two, and be-
fore I knew it, the
man would let me
stay permanent-
ly if I worked to
redeem myself of
my thievery. These
folks, known as the
Livingstones, took
me into their home
which became my
own. I grew up the
