Defenses
You may have to defend against a left punch with your left hand, either because
of an injury to your right hand or by misreading the attack and attempting to
recover from a bad position. We never prefer this defense.
STARTING POSITION: Left-leg-forward fighting stance.
1. As the attacker’s left punch develops, with your left hand make a regular
inside defense. For additional safety, rotate your wrist sharply as you redirect,
trying to stay close to the attacker’s wrist. Your defense will now be made
against the inside of the attacking hand, rather than the outside as usual. Your
hand defense should be accompanied by a body defense. The body defense may
be slightly larger than usual to accommodate the possibility that the attacker’s
elbow may bend around your defense.
