Defenses
This defense, which redirects the attack, is made from the same position and
against the same attack as Outside Defense #1. Most students find this defense
slightly stronger than Defense #1. The decision to make Defense #1 or Defense
#2 is largely arbitrary, depending on the individual’s body type. However,
Defense #1 is faster, while Defense #2 is stronger.
STARTING POSITION: Left-leg-forward fighting stance, left hand dropped
forward and down, facing your attacker.
1. As the attacker throws a left punch, bring your forward hand up in a short arc,
with the back of your hand leading so that your thumb faces you. The motion of
this arc MUST cross in front of your face since that’s where the punch is
probably going. Redirect the punch away from you while making a small body
defense with your head.
