Stories, Building
Communities
Roots on 6 is a shared space and a digital storytelling
platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of
multigenerational refugees, newcomers and Indigenous
peoples on Treaty 6 territory. Through artistic expression,
cultural storytelling and collective dialogues, Roots
on 6 helps us reflect on our past and imagine a more
interconnected future.
The Newcomer Centre is part of the Roots on 6
collaborative effort that brings together diverse
voices to honour stories of steadfastness, cultural
heritage, and the shared experiences that unite us.
On June 19, 2024, this cross-collaboration co-hosted,
a powerful event at City Hall to mark World Refugee
Day (June 20) and National Indigenous Peoples
Day (June 21), spotlighting stories of
Displacement and resilience
Cultural heritage and healing
Art as a vehicle for memory and change
Through spoken word, storytelling, music,
fashion, food and poetry, we honoured those who
have journeyed across borders and those whose
roots run deep on this land.
