Rich has 3 phonemes, even though it has 4 letters. The
combination ch stands for the mouth move /ch/ at the
beginning of chop. But pitch also has 3 phonemes; you
can tell because it rhymes with rich.

When children read a new word, they need to sound out
the phonemes like this /r/ /a/ /t/ for the word rat.

As for the difference between phonemes and
letters: phonemes are the actual sounds we form when
speaking, whereas letters are the signs used to depict
those sounds in writing

Phoneme Segmentation

You can segment, or break apart, any word to recognize
the sounds or phonemes in that word. In order to figure
out how many phonemes a word has, it's best to say the
word out loud to focus on the sounds that make up the
