5 Dear Mr. O’Donnell,
5 I want to become the next Director of Youth, Parks and Community Enrichment for the City of
Sacramento. With the genesis of my career of public service beginning in parks and recreation, I have
5 been fortunate to have gained valuable leadership experience in city and county government as well as
non-profit organizations in the mid-West and California over the years. My professional passion for
parks, recreation and healthy communities, has inspired me to pursue this outstanding leadership
opportunity for Sacramento. With many years of public parks and recreation agency leadership
experience in California, I have always loved the scenic setting and vibrant qualities of the Sacramento
5 region so this position has an extraordinary appeal to me professionally and personally. I believe my
leadership would truly make a positive difference in the quality of life for the residents, workers and
5 visitors of Sacramento parks and recreational facilities, programs and special events for community
5 enrichment.
5 The attached resume reflects my extensive leadership and management experience in complex park
agencies that include my current position as Director of the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation
Department as well as the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department and the El Dorado Hills
Community Service District. I understand both the challenges and opportunities inherent with large
metropolitan parks and open space systems with community and customer service purpose. My unique
5 professional attributes as a landscape architect bring high standards for park design, aesthetics, quality
maintenance and environmental stewardship.
40 I recently led the Tucson Parks and Recreation Department through its first successful voter-approved
parks capital improvements bond ballot initiative known as Proposition 407 that will provide $225
million of much-needed funding and re-investment in 100 City of Tucson parks. During this same time, I
was successful in receiving Mayor and Council approval of funding to launch a new park ranger program
and a transformative, non-toxic integrated pest management program. I’m also known as the city’s
champion of trees and leading beautification efforts citywide. My favorite holiday is Arbor Day!
I am especially proud of my significant career of successful financial and budget management. I would
bring that fiscal acumen to the City of Sacramento with the important commitment to transparency,
Currently the Parks and Rec Director at Tuscon, has been there for 1 year. Was at Anaheim for
two years before Tuscon, 4 years at El Dorado Hills, 5 years at SF, and spent time in several accountability and effective resource stewardship, all essential performance elements in today’s public
other locations before SF. Has the experience of being in large urban cities and gave many service sectors. In my first year of service as the Director of Operations for Golden Gate Park I was
great examples of programs he has put in place such as participating in getting a ballot measure awarded the City and County of San Francisco’s Top Fiscal Manager Award, an honor I was quite
across the finish line for $125M new funds; launching the Golden Gate Park Cultural Collaborative humbled to have received. During my years working in San Francisco, I developed a stronger
to get all the non-profit partners communicating and working together; currently working on an environmental ethic and commitment to social equity. I will bring these passions to Sacramento!
Organic First City program in Tuscon that he will be presenting to Council on 4/23 that is a hybrid
program where non-glycosphate based sprays will be used where people touch the turf. Very
outgoing person who focuses on building a network and ensuring there is good communication
internally and externally. He is skilled in working through staff and being selected as a leader
for many efforts. Strong candidate and should move forward in the process.
