From: Suhail A. Kanwar, M.S., P.E. Public Works Director/County Engineer, McKenzie County, ND
Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to express my interest in a position open with your esteemed organization. I have served as
the Public Works Director for McKenzie County, North Dakota since May of 2013. I also was Public
Works Director for Lyon County, MN for five years from July 2008 to May of 2013. McKenzie County is
hub of the oil exploration in North Dakota, known as the sweet-spot of Bakken Shale. This brings its own
set of challenges for all the departments within the public works.
My eighteen years of education speaks for my commitment to the success of my career. I have over a
decade of work experience and continuous growth of responsibilities and performance as a leader, as
well as being a team player. I believe in leaving my mark wherever I serve. I do so by working with
honesty, integrity, outside of the box thinking, and the hard work. I never lose sight of the future.
I communicate clearly and effectively. I strive to identify myself as an honest, thoughtful, and loyal
employee. I am respectful and tactful in my daily conduct. I believe in creating structure of efficiency,
building trust, and improving customer service. I lead by example, and I am ready to work late including
over weekends when necessary.
I believe in quality and do not believe in taking short cuts. Through my practical experience, serving on
volunteer board and training efforts, I strive to enrich my understanding of organizational behavior. I
make sincere efforts of knowing people in my department in order to understand their talents as well as
their professional needs. This kind of interaction gives me a deeper understanding of my department
and my people.
I, currently manage Public Works with the help of five departmental managers. I constantly work at
gaining hands on experience of their positions by making myself available to help out when they need
me. This kind of interaction and experience help me understand the level of difficulty staff faces in doing
their jobs and where I can provide them with the tools they need to succeed. It also helps me
understand operational costs, which come handy when I am compiling the department budget.
I believe my job is to use departmental and scientific data to improve sustainability in order to improve
quality of life for the community I serve.
I am deeply committed to my profession. I believe my personal skills, educational background, and
unique life and work experiences make me a right candidate for this position. I look forward to hearing
from you.
Sincerely,
Suhail A. Kanwar
