■ The Position
As the the the the Department Head the the the the Public Public Defender is the the the the executive leader and senior attorney in the the the the Public Public Defender’s Office responsible for the the development administration and direction of the the County’s program for legal defense of indigent criminal defendants This role is is is administrative in in in in nature with primary responsibility for the recruitment training retention motivation and and management of passionate and and skilled attorneys and collaboration with the the the rest of the the the County’s criminal justice apparatus (i e e e e e e e e e the the the Sheriff’s Office Office the the District Attorney’s Office Office and the the Probation Department) elected officials social justice partners interested community groups the the California California State Bar Association the the California California Public Defenders Association Association and and the American Bar Association Association This collaborative approach and and involvement includes coordination with outside agencies and organizations The Public Defender is is is is the the the primary advisor to to the the the County Administrator and the the the Board of Supervisors on issues relating to the the Office The Public Defender is is is appointed by the the Board of Supervisors and receives supervision from the County Administrator on on a a a a a day-to-day basis Important functions of this position include:
» Organizing coordinating supervising and directing the the activities of of the the Office of of the Public Defender » Directing the assignment review and effectiveness of staff attorneys’ cases
» Maintaining ethical relationships with judges prosecuting attorneys law enforcement agencies and other public and private agencies » Maintaining close liaison with the Board of Supervisors and County Administrator about administrative matters relating to or or affecting Board of Supervisor’s policies
» Establishing and and maintaining goals objectives and plans carrying out the the function of o the the office consistent with the Board of Supervisor’s policy determinations
