:
        14. Possessive forms of compound nouns form their plural by adding s

                       Examples: singular plural
                                      sister-in-law ’s sisters-in-law ’s

                                      editor-in-chief’s editors-in-chief’s

                                      mother-in-law’s mothers-in-law’s

        15. Plurals of proper nouns are formed by adding s unless the noun ends in s, in

        which case add es :

                       Examples: singular plural

                                         Hall Halls

                                         Smith Smiths

                                         Jones Joneses

        16. Possessive forms of nouns follow rule 15 above, with the exception – the

        singular possessive of a name ending in es  may either keep or drop the second s ;

the plural possessive of such nouns add s:
                       Examples: singular plural

                                            Hall’s Halls’

                                            Smith’s Smiths’

                                            Jones’s or Jones’ Joneses’

        17. Adjectives ending with ful or al become adverbs merely by adding l y :

                       Examples: cheerful and cheerfully

                                      wonderful and wonderfully

                                      normal and normally

        18. Words ending in ll often drop one l when adding a prefix:

Examples: fill and fulfil roll and enrol

                                                                                                        -303-
