Academy-Award winning writer and renowned playwright Aaron Sorkin graduated from Syracuse University with a B.F.A. in Theatre.
He made his Broadway playwriting debut at 28 with A Few Good Men, for which he received the John Gassner Award as “Outstanding New American Playwright.” The following year saw the debut of his off-Broadway play, Making Movies, and later, he returned to Broadway with The Farnsworth Invention.
Sorkin transitioned to films with a 1993 adaptation of his play, A Few Good Men. The movie was nominated for four Academy Awards® including Best Picture and five Golden Globes including Best Screenplay.
In 2011, Sorkin won the Academy Award®, Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award, BAFTA and Writers Guild Award in the “Best Adapted Screenplay” category for The Social Network. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards® including Best Picture and was awarded Best Drama at the Golden Globes.
The following year, Sorkin adapted for the big screen the Academy Award-winning film Moneyball and then went on to write the feature film Steve Jobs, winning him the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay.
Sorkin made his directorial debut in 2017 with Molly’s Game, which garnered him Best Screenplay nominations for an Academy Award®, Golden Globe Award, Writers Guild Award and BAFTA Award.
Sorkin created and produced NBC’s renowned series The West Wing, which earned nine Emmy nominations in its first season and went on to win a total of 26 Primetime Emmys. He also produced and wrote the Emmy-nominated series Sports Night, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The Newsroom.
In 2018, Sorkin premiered his Broadway stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The production currently holds the title of the highest grossing American play in Broadway history and garnered a Best Actress Tony Award, along with an additional eight nominations.
Recently, Sorkin premiered his newest feature drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, which he wrote and directed for Netflix. The picture features an all-star ensemble cast and thus far, has been nominated for 5 Golden Globes, 6 Critics’ Choice Awards and 3 SAG awards. Sorkin’s next project is Being the Ricardos, the Amazon film he is writing and directing about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, set during one production week of I Love Lucy.
