Spofford
In May 2010, CSCS formed a charities committee with the following mission:

Establish a CSCS Charities Program to support those in our local communities who are less fortunate
than us, making a meaningful difference through exceptional means.

The committee chose our previous partner, Spofford, an organization dedicated to helping emotionally
troubled children suffering from physical or sexual abuse, neglect, and mental health disorders. Spofford
provides a variety of treatment programs to help meet the needs of at-risk children and their families. In
addition to their residential treatment facility, which houses 49 children from the ages of 4 to 12, Spofford
offers school- based case management programs, summer day camp, and specialized counseling services.

Mike Leikam, CSCS President & CEO, states, “‘Community - fostering a culture of teamwork and goodwill’ is
one of the six core values of CSCS. I cannot think of a better demonstration of this core value than our
team’s support of Spofford’s important work with some of our area’s greatest at-risk children. This is a great
example of truly giving back in a meaningful way and fostering our culture of teamwork and goodwill. It is
gratifying to see so many of our associates emulate the behaviors consistently demonstrated by our Co-op
Member owners and their involvements with their chosen charities in their communities.” Because of
CSCS’s involvement with Spofford, Mike served on the Spofford Board of Directors.

As of January 2017, cash and supply contributions of over $70,800 had been made by CSCS associates. No
Co-op Member monies are used to support Spofford. Cash contributions come from associates paying to
wear jeans to work, as well as outside fundraisers, such as an annual Stone Soup event, bake sales and taco
         lunches.

Essential supplies for the children were donated by associates based on a monthly list of requested items
from Spofford. Some items are needed throughout the year, such as vitamins and toiletries, while others are
seasonal, such as school supplies, backpacks and sunscreen.

For the holidays, CSCS associates provided Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving turkeys and, at Christmas,
gifts for an entire dorm of ten children with items from the children’s wish lists. For the past two
Christmases, in addition to sponsoring the dorm, associates have also provided for several families that
         utilize Spofford’s non-residential services.

Each year, associates have donated items to fill huge baskets with various themes to sell during a silent
auction at an annual community fund raising event, the Spofford Butterfly Gala.

CSCS has chosen to sponsor Spofford as a way of giving back to the community and to help children have a
better chance in life. Mary Hempfling, CSCS Senior Director, Procurement, states, “The team at CSCS has
been very dedicated to this worthy cause through their generous cash and supply donations each month,
sponsoring fundraising events, and giving their time to support the children of Spofford.” In 2012 and 2013,
Mary served on the Spofford Board of Directors, as well as the Resource and Gala Committees.

        Rose Brooks
In January of 2018 we transitioned to a new community partner Rose Brooks. Their mission is to end the
cycle of domestic violence so that adults, children and pets can live free of abuse. We look forward to
building and fostering the same kind of relationship with them that we had with Spofford. If you would like to
learn more about Rose Brooks, please visit www.rsosebrooks.org.
