Brittany and Shunwen got a lot of inspiration from eating on the Kantok in Lanna and shared food together even though they didn’t speak the same language, they were able to share food and they think food is an international language.
Apart from the handicraft, the natural materials used by Lanna people in daily life, like Khan Tok made of bamboo or banana leaves for wrapping desserts, inspire for new products and this is the origin of ‘Sum Rap Thai’, the biodegradable food containers.
From the impression in the lifestyle of Lanna people connecting with the nature by using materials from surrounding nature to invent many things and the remaining materials could be biodegradable by nature without environmental damage, Brittany and Shunwen chose to design theproducts supporting the dining culture without producing waste, naturally biodegradable or reused. Here are the food containers made of natural materials, like water hyacinth and cassava, which were tested through the process of paper production. 1. Kantok: circle-shaped food container inspired by the Northern Khan Tok. 2. Miang Kham: snack wrapping paper made of hyacinth inspired by Thai Stuffed Dough Pyramid (Kanom Tian).
3. Can: square-shaped food plate made of hyacinth also inspired by the snack wrapping.
All these three products are contained in the envelope of fun and modern look, including the method of usage. They are considered as the integrated creative products and create the benefit for local craftsmen, consumers and environment.
