Root
In the past, the northern part of Thailand had been the location of Lanna Kingdom which was established by King Mengrai by B.E. 1835 and its capital city was officially located in B.E. 1839 under the name of Nopphaburi Si Nakhon Phing Chiang Mai. Its topography is mountains alternating with plateaus and there are people living in many areas.
Similar to other areas in Thailand, the Northern part is another land having a variety of races, apart from Lanna people, there are also other races living in the same areas, for example, Dai Yong, Dai Kun migrating from Myanmar, Karens and Mong, etc. These races have their own identity including dialect, clothing, tradition and local handicraft characteristics. However, the important elements highly similar to each other are accents, singing, dancing, and agricultural lifestyle, respect of sacred item and ancestor’s spirits, faith in Theravada Buddhism, the expression of sentiment and emotion through literary language, music and handiworks.
Additionally, many communities in the northern part are living by relying on nature. They apply surrounding natural materials to create tools and equipment for daily life and this is the starting point of handicraft works with simplicity, beauty and self-identification which tourists accept and popularly buy as the souvenirs.
This Chapter “Root” shall lead you to know the root of culture producing handicraft works and leading to the budding of products created by new generations.
