 Ban Tha Kan, San Pa Tong District, Chiang Mai Province
Ban Tha Kan is a community located in the area of ancient city and surrounding moat of Wiang Tha Kan, Ban Klang Sub-district, San Pa Tong District, Chiang Mai Province. People in the community are Tai Yong people migrating from Kengtung Town, Shan State of Myanmar and taking along the unique art and culture such as native musical performance called Klong Mong Seng, native food and dessert, native language as well as dressing style including Tai Yong local architecture. These people migrated from Yong Town of Myanmar and have been living in Wiang Tha Kan area for more than 200 years. Yong people’s characteristics are loving, prioritizing and strictly maintaining culture and tradition, resulting in cultural aggregation strictly, continuously and extensively.
The phase of "Silver is under water, gold is underground”, which means income from natural resources in the community, reflects lifestyle of Ban Tha Kan people very well since they mostly live their life based on agricultural society. Most of them live in simple rural society and make a living by agriculture. Furthermore, they are closed and get acquainted with each other likewise relatives. Community people are also helping and supporting each other very well and the temple is the center of spiritual anchor. When having leisure time free from agricultural activities, they will make basketwork utilizing natural materials in local, such as chicken coop, lamp and lacquer ware made of bamboo, as well as food box and other home décor made of palm leaves, which are very easy to find in the community.
In the past, utensils made of bamboo and palm leaves had always been produced for household use because they are not only made of natural resources easily found in surrounding locality, but also durable, difficult to be damaged and antiinsects. Ban Tha Kan people combine these strong points with creative ideas and unique basketwork skill in order to become new products with different styles, getting more demands from market and tourists. Eventually, these products become the significant products increasing income for community as another source
