Ban Nong Nguek, Pa Sang District, Lamphun Province
Ban Nong Nguek is the community of Yong people whose ancestors was Yong people living in Yunnan Province, Xishuangbanna Region, China and migrated to colonize at Yong Town of Myanmar, and then migrated to the northern part of Thailand in the Era of Lanna Recoveryunder Siam Governance approximately B.E. 2348 – 2356 or the period of King Kavila. They lived in the basin of Tha River, Pa Sang District, Lamphun Province and expanded to live in Ban Nong Nguek at present. Generally, Yong people will have unity and help each other as well as maintain the uniqueness including Yong language and cotton weaving culture which is inherited since ancient era. The hand woven cotton of Ban Nong Nguek is dominant in the natural production process with manpower in every stages and the dyeing of natural colors. With these potentials, at present, Ban Nong Nguek becomes the biggest source of cotton production in the northern part of Thailand. People in the community are all employed and can sustainably rely on themselves according to the philosophy of sufficient economy. Additionally, this community is selected to be the leader of Lamphun’s woven fabric group network along with Ban Don Luang. The competency of fabric weaving mixed with the creative idea enable Yong people to design new patterns of fabric by adding details and colors, becoming new patterns such as Kled Tai Luk Om pattern, Kled Tao Moo pattern, Kled Tao Jew pattern, Kled Tao Ta pattern, Dok Chang pattern, Dok Nok pattern, Dok Bua Krue pattern, Dok Khor Lai Thai pattern. Besides, the hand woven cottons are applied to be products in various categories such as apparel, utensil, decor as well as supplies used in religious rites i.e. Tung Prasart (mobile flag), etc.
