Foreword : Penny Herscovitch & Dan Gottlieb
Collaboration and co-creation across cultures is the heart of the Future Craft Thailand + Japan project. The Future Craft studio challenged students to create designs that extend Northern Thai craft traditions to global markets, create value for artisan villages, and innovate with renewable natural materials. We are immensely grateful to our partnership with the Lanna Culture & Crafts Association and support from the Thai Ministry of Industry, which allowed design student teams from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and Tama Art University in Tokyo co-create together with Lanna craftspeople in Northern Thailand. We hope that the student design proposals that have emerged from this inspiring research trip across Northern Thailand in turn generate global impact for the communities who so graciously shared their traditions and culture with our class.
