DETERMINING TOTAL CREDIT

HOURS

When you are comparing schools, one of the very first questions you
should ask is this:
“How many credit hours (courses) will I need to complete in order to earn
my BSN at this school?”

This sounds like a simple question; however, there are many factors
that affect the answer. Ask these five questions of every school that you
research:

1. How many transfer credits will I be awarded for my nursing diploma or
associate degree of nursing (ADN)?
2. How many additional transfer credits will I be awarded for general
education courses that I’ve already taken?
3. What general education requirements will I still need to take?

4. Are there pre-requisites or co-requisites to complete before I begin my
nursing course work?

5. How many total credit hours (courses) will I need and what does my
complete degree plan look like?

Here are American Sentinel University’s answers to these
questions:

1. TRANSFER CREDITS – You will be awarded 60 credit hours for your
original nursing curriculum, including foundational classes, from an
associate nursing degree or nursing diploma.
2. BACHELOR’S DEGREE OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN): – Up to 90
credits.
The number of credit hours you receive for past general education
course work taken depends on your transcripts, but in addition to the
block of 60 credit hours you’ll receive for an ADN or nursing diploma,
we award transfer credit for courses in our five general education
categories:
• Communication Competency

• Humanities
• Behavioral and Social Sciences
• Science, Mathematics and Information Technology
