W ITH schools breaking up and the summer really beginning, Chesterfield, once again, has a jam-packed
schedule.
The Chesterfield Canal Festival is taking place, the Custom Solar
Chesterfield Festival of Cricket is fast approaching, and the ever- popular Sparkle Night Walk is almost upon us.
And just in time for the influx of shoppers to the town centre, we revealed the best shops, stores and stall holders at the recent Chesterfield Retail Awards.
Huge congratulations go to everybody involved in the fifth annual Retail Awards. The event has grown year-on-year, providing a welcome challenge for Destination Chesterfield. This year, they upped the ante again making it black tie and adding two brand new awards categories – Apprentice of the Year and Apprentice Employer of the Year.
As an advocate of apprenticeships - something which I see as integral to the town’s future growth and success - I very much welcomed the introduction of the new awards categories.
A big ‘well done’ to all winners and shortlisted businesses. Events like the Retail Awards are imperative in recognising and celebrating our local economy.
In a similar vein to the Retail Awards, we have now started our preparations for the Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards. Nominations are now in for Chesterfield’s favourite bars, restaurants, cafes and tea rooms – we just need to choose the winners. Trust me, it’s always a difficult task.
The town centre is also getting on board hosting lots of events over the next month and beyond.
The market is central to our identity as a town and we are using that to our full advantage – in July alone we can enjoy Artisan, Farmers and Young Person’s markets as well as a Medieval Fun Day. All are well worth a visit.
In the town centre, it’s been great to see the progress being made on converting the former Co-op building on Elder Way to a hotel.
The scaffolding is up and we’re tantalisingly close to massively upping our accommodation offering for the town centre.
Stephenson’s B&B is also opening and the conversion of the former Post Office building to residential accommodation and a café is also well underway.
It’s always great to see businesses growing, expanding and thriving here in Chesterfield and that’s thanks to everyone who shops in them. Remember, if we don’t use them, we lose them!
