DronfieldNEWS Town Council
Petition changes
DRONFIELD Town Council discussed the amendments to the petition scheme at North East Derbyshire District Council.
The changes made at the 19th May district council meeting mean that petitions made by residents over current issues will be excluded from the scheme.
Coun Alex Dale commented: “These changes made by the district council will prevent members of the public from petitioning on issues which are subject to consultation, including the Local Plan. They are a disgraceful attempt to shut down debate.”
A motion was proposed by Coun Alex Dale, seconded by Coun Angelique Foster. The Town Council is to write to North East Derbyshire District Council to formally
complain about the recent changes they have made to the petition scheme which will prevent members of the public from petitioning on issues which are subject to consultation or about to be.
Dronfield Town Council believes that this constitutes an attempt to shut down debate and remove the residents their democratic right to petition their local authority.
The Town Council is also to request an explanation about the reason why the petition signed by more than 4,000 residents asking for protection of Dronfield's Greenbelt and presented to the district council Leader, Coun Graham Baxter, in February, was not fully considered or debated at a full council meeting as it should have been.
