Digitally reconstructed scenes of old Ashopton, created by Chesterfield College students
The collection was expected to sell for £50 but Bamford and District History Group bought the lot for £310.
Kathleen Hearnshaw, chair of Bamford History Group, said some of the images had been seen before but many hadn’t.
She commented: “The pictures show a different way of life. The village was known for being pretty and it had no electricity or mains. You couldn’t imagine somewhere like this being lost today. It seems awful to think that buildings like the beautiful Jacobean hall were destroyed.
“When we heard about the album coming up for sale, we decided to try to buy it and I bid by telephone.”
Following publicity about the sale, Kathleen was approached by college lecturers who saw an opportunity for students.
James Thomson, career pathway leader for the college’s digital technologies department, explained: "There has been some incredible work involved in such a short space of time which has given our students the chance to apply their knowledge and prove what they are capable of. It was great to be given the opportunity to see how digital
technology can bring history to life.”
Visitors to the exhibition were thrilled to try out the virtual tour,
especially some local residents who lived in Ashopton as children. Kathleen said: “We had over 400 visitors and everyone was
impressed by the standard of the work of the students. The lecturers came on both days of the exhibition to help visitors get the most out of the ‘virtual reality’ and digital images and I cannot thank them enough. I will sing the praises of the staff and students in this department as loud as I can; what they have done is nothing short of fantastic.”
Kathleen has recorded interviews with several people who lived in Ashopton as children. Their memories include their parents selling teas to passing hikers from their front rooms to make extra money.
There are likely to be further exhibitions and events in the future and the college team may turn their attention to also bringing the lost landmarks of Derwent back to life.
