May Day magic in village
Warm sunshine greeted a larger-than- average attendance at this year’s Ashover May Day celebrations. John Winter reports
H UGE crowds made the most of Ashover’s annual May Day Carnival in sunny weather.
They enjoyed May Pole dancing, stalls, races and an opening ceremony performed by a popular local couple.
A spokesperson for the organising committee said: “Ashover May Day Carnival is a traditional event which helps to keep alive all the simple but important activities everyone enjoys.
“These include Ashover’s local brass band, morris dancing, garland dancing, clowns, an escapologist, wonderful singing from the local school choir, and a very special singing group with beautiful melodies and tremendous dedicated voices.
“In its tradition there was a May Queen, King and their attendants plus garland attendants who led the parade.
“These traditions are so important to our lives and long may this event help towards keeping it alive.”
• Unfortunately, in a change to traditions, Wings is unable to publish the names of the May King and Queen and their entourage - despite the fact that they were given out at the crowning ceremony - or winners of the races and competitions. The event organisers fear this would breach data protection legislation.
