Romans delay development
Work at a new housing development has been slowed by an archeological discovery dating back around 2,000 years. John Winter reports
R OMAN remains found at the site of new housing development at Hanging Banks, Wingerworth, have held
up development there, and may also affect a plan for 35 houses at Hockley Lane, Wingerworth.
The line of the Rykneld Street Roman road lies approximately 850m to the east of the Hanging Banks site, broadly followed by the modern route of the A61.
The site lays adjacent to the western side of the road, and archaeological evaluation trenching here has confirmed that a number of the enclosures and other anomalies previously identified through geophysical survey are of a Roman
date.
Evidence of Roman buildings has been identified, including both stone-built and post and beam structures which have been initially dated from pottery as late 1st or early 2nd Century.
Excavations at Hanging Banks are thought to have been completed, but now the County Archaeologist Department
has decided that a study needs to be done at the Hockley Lane site.
Their report states: “The applicant’s archaeological consultants have revised their assessment report. This now provides more information about the ground conditions on the site; the survival of features which relate to the former Wingerworth Park post-
medieval deer park and includes reference to the recently discovered Roman site at Hanging Banks.
“The site should be evaluated by means of a scheme of trial trenching. On the basis of the results of this work, there may be a need for further more detailed archaeological works in order to record any remains.
“All phases of this fieldwork must be undertaken in advance of any development of the site.”
No date has yet been fixed for the planning application to be determined.
Meanwhile, residents of Nether Close will be dismayed to see that the County Highways Department say that their road could be used as access to the proposed development, via a bungalow that would be demolished.
The report states: “Access to the development is proposed via an extension of the turning head at end of Nether Close facilitated by the demolition of an existing dwelling. The extension will be in the form of an acute bend.
“The width of the access road is proposed at 5.5m with 2m wide footways on each side.“
Elsewhere in Wingerworth, an appeal will take place on August 14th for eight days against NEDDC’s refusal to allow development of a further 180 homes off Deerlands Road, by Rippon Homes.
NE Derbyshire District Council’s planning committee refused an application for 80 homes off Hillhouses Lane, Wingerworth, because it would be outside the development limit of the village, would be a harmful intrusion into the countryside and have a harmful effect on a valued landscape.
