Great Tangley Manor is a 16th century manor house with a past history of Royal
ownership. Tangley Manor became a focal point for the Arts and Craft movement when the
manor was acquired by Wickham Flower in 1884/85 who was a founder member of the
Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. The membership consisted of William
Morris, Burne Jones, Alma Tadema, Holman Hunt and Phillip Webb ,
among others , who set about restoring the manor. Phillip Webb designed the extension to the
east elevation and the gardens were created in the Arts and Craft style.
Gertrude Jekyll would often visit Great Tangley from her home at Munstead Wood.
