WELCOME TO MONROE

While the town has sustained a progressive growth over the past 20 years, it has not lost its New
England character and charm. Monroe is a family-oriented community with an award winning
school system, recreational facilities and a variety of houses of worship.

The town is named after James Monroe the fifth President of the United States, serving
from 1817-1825, and is a growing community in Fairfield County. Incorporated
in 1823, it covers 26 square miles, and is approximately 75 percent developed.
Historic properties can be found in Monroe Center, a designated historic district
distinguished by a green and an Episcopal church dating back to Thomas
       Jefferson’s presidency.

Monroe has seen many changes, from being predominantly farmland, to
a vibrant community that maintains itself through progressive economic
development. The town of Monroe boasts fantastic recreational facilities
such as Wolfe Park, Great Hollow Lake, Webb Mountain and the Rails to
Trails bike paths that provide a variety of outdoor enjoyment. Monroe
continues to grow with new commercial buildings and businesses
coming to town. The public schools are ranked #15 in the state, an
impressive achievement that all town residents are proud of.
