AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: CYCLONE IDAI
Tropical Cyclone Idai, the strongest on record to hit the Southern Hemisphere, made landfall in Beira,
Mozambique on March 14, 2019. It caused widespread devastation in Mozambique and severe damage in
Zimbabwe and Malawi, with nearly 3 million people affected – more than half of them children. There is ex-
tensive damage to water infrastructures and public health service access has been disrupted, increasing the
likelihood of disease outbreak.
A major humanitarian crisis unfolded in the wake of the cyclone, with hundreds of thousands of people in
urgent need of assistance. In Mozambique, rescuers were forced to let some people die in order to save oth-
ers. A cholera outbreak ensued in the storm's wake in Beira, with more than 500 confirmed cases and one
fatality by March 31.
Infrastructural damages from Idai across Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Malawi were estimated
to be at least US $1 billion, making Idai the costliest tropical cyclone in the South-West Indian Ocean basin.
