 kyle casey chu
1. Tell us about the members of your band!
KC: hiiiiii. my name’s kyle casey chu. I vox, play bass and bari sax in SISSYFIT. I’m a queer, fourth-gen, chinese- american, living in Brooklyn, via SF. my foray into punk was as a gender-variant teenager, playing bari sax for
an all-white fringe dude hardcore band called abi yoyos. which was, at once, an empowering and quasi-isolating tbh. im mostly a bottom. i like fucking bears and cubs.
tea cake francis voxes, plays drums, is a paralegal by day, and has hands down the most hilarious snapchat social commentary (seriously, they will make you crack up at the most inopportune moments- elevators, libraries, funerals, etc.). they’re one of my best buds- kind, sassy- which is a killer combination- has a penchant for riot grrl (which has inspired their coinage of a new genderqueer movement called “riot prrrson”) and rightfully obsessed with pugs. we share a smoldering misanthropy for ev- erything that really hope it comes thru in our music. also, we’re both really into the same trashy tv, snacks, and literature, which makes life and summer vacations literally fly by. <3
diana hernandez, AKA die hard (or cry hard, depending on her mood, and how homesick we are on tour), or self- proclaimed “daddy d”, plays guitar, and is SISSY’s new- est edition. san jose born and bred queer xican@ aspir- ing social worker, who’s literally been a manager at every establishment you’ve ever encountered, and knows cars, which super came in handy on our first national tour. die hard doesn’t fuck around, and has comparably hilarious snapchat game.
yup, that’s us. tea cake and i met at one of my old band’s shows in oakland one year, and then later at a brown brunch at their old qpoc house, “the pony palace” a while back. tea cake introduced me to diana at think and die thinking fest in like... 2013?? and the rest is herstory.
2. Band/release, performance or tour history?
KC: butthole dentata was our first EP! we released it in 2014 to much acclaim from our friends and disdain from our parents. mostly because of the graphic cover art.
after that, we went on a very long and very fucking ambitious national tour, counterclockwise, from san francisco bay area to los angeles, mesa arizona, new mexico, atx (nate fucking buckley and critical dad!), new orleans (hi kate kibby and nessa and her beard!), atl (hi TI! - tea cake), north carolina, dc, brooklyn (thanks for letting us crash, tina!), philly (hot tears!), columbus and sandusky oh (to ride one of the biggest rollercoasters in US), chicago (hi jorge, boots and sick sad world!), twin cities (hi kitten forever!), south dako- ta (suck it founding fathers!), seattle (hi my parade!), pdx and home!so... we did all of that in one month. it was fun as hell, but straight up arduous at times. but that’s a whole ‘nother story, trust.
right now, we’re gearing up to release our first 7” called “there goes the neighborhood”. i think in late 2016? again, its just the usual: us bitching about white hegemony.
