The call for abolishing policing (and the prison industrial complex more broadly) is not because of this spotlighted violence happening- these heightened flashpoints and increased uprisings are happening because policing and prisons are built on reforms of slavery, and the people most impacted (people of color, immigrants, queer & trans people, disabled people & many more) have been fighting long before it became “popular.”
