Poem, Cont. from page 7
That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person con- tinue to hurt you.
I've learned....
That love, not time, heals all wounds.
I've learned....
That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to sur- round myself with people smarter than I am.
I've learned....
That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.
I've learned....
That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.
I've learned....
That life is tough, but I'm tougher.
I've learned....
That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.
I've learned....
That when you harbor bit- terness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
I've learned....
That I wish I could have told my Mom that I love her one more time before she passed away.
I've learned....
That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.
I've learned....
That a smile is an inexpen- sive way to improve your looks.
I've learned....
That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, you're hooked for life.
I've learned....
That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.
I've learned....
That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
To me, these truths still resonate today.
• It means freedom, not just political freedom but personal freedom.
• It means the freedom to make choices.
• It means the freedom to make a difference in the world.
• It means the freedom to love those that matter to me.
• It means the freedom to pursue my goals.
• It means the freedom to express myself and the right of free speech but not the right to commit hate crimes like happened in Orlando, Florida in June.
• It means the freedom to practice the religion I choose.
• It means the right to privacy.
• It means the right to vote.
• It means “Government of the people, by the people, for the people” as Abraham Lincoln stated in his Gettysburg address.
• Most importantly, it means the freedom to dream.
• Last month, I visited the 9/11 Museum in New York City. Site of the World Trade Center, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum are a tribute to those that perished on that hor- rible day but more importantly, they are a testament of the Declaration of Independence state- ment previously mentioned. To be able to walk through the museum with hundreds of others and yet be able to hear a pin drop, is quite a moving experience and one I will not forget. If you are able to travel to New York, make this a MUST SEE stop. Look for the white rose(s) at the reflecting pools.
As you celebrate this holiday, keep those serving in the military in your thoughts and prayers. It is because of them we still enjoy the freedoms we have.
I recall watching the fireworks one year and sitting next to a little girl who was thrilled about the fireworks. I asked her how she was enjoying them and as only a child could answer, she excitedly replied, “Isn’t it special, everyone is celebrating my birthday”. It is our nation’s birth- day; celebrate as if it was yours too.
As was written in the Virginia Gazette in July, 1777 on the first anniversary celebration, “Everything was conducted with the greatest order and decorum and the face of joy and glad- ness was universal. Thus may the 4th of July, that glorious and most memorable day, be cele- brated through America, by the sons of freedom, from age to age till time shall be no more. Amen and amen.”
Have a happy and safe Fourth of July and continue to enjoy what Northwestern Illinois has to offer, continue to be involved, engaged with others and staying active.
