The Monocle Quarterly Journal is a business journal dedicated to interrogating the underlying forces that drive the tectonic social, economic and political changes that are presently taking place across the globe. This Journal specifically focuses on the banking and finance industries, which are the mechanisms by which capital and funding are allocated, and which have become ever more critical to society. Each quarter, the Journal pays particular attention to a specific theme – usually one that we believe is driving significant change in the global financial markets.
This issue of the Journal focuses on the spectre of artificial intelligence and questions the degree to which AI will disrupt our current economic and social structures. As a technology that promises to significantly alter the way we live, work, and interact with each other, there still seems to exist a great deal of confusion and disagreement among the general public and experts alike on what exactly is meant by artificial intelligence. For this reason, this issue of the Journal wishes to examine the true nature of artificial intelligence – what it is capable of at present, what it is not capable of, and what a future saturated with AI might look like – ultimately in the aim of dispelling much of the myth, misnomer and hysteria surrounding this often-misunderstood field of research.
