Another deeply compelling storytelling project is the
Nkashi Visual Voices. This is a project aimed at using the
power of photography and storytelling to give the deaf
community living around the Okavango Delta a platform
to express themselves, contribute to the conservation of
the natural heritage as well as to improve their livelihoods.
Nkashi Trust works with sign language instructor,
Gobonaone Modisane, from Maun Secondary School as
the students are taught the technicalities of photography
and the art of Nature Photography.
On a recent trip to the fabulous Elephant Havens
(please consider supporting their great work if you haven’t
already) the young storytellers interacted closely with
orphan elephants. Perhaps it was the fact that both the
animals and these brave young people face such challenges
in their lives at an early age, that allowed them to bond in
such a significant way.
All the cohorts complete the programme with a
photography exhibition where they display some of
their finest photographs at events hosted by the Nkashi
Knowledge Centre - Maun.
It is Nkashi Trust’s hope that one day the narrative of the
natural stories of the Okavango Delta, the 1000th UNESCO
World Heritage Site, will be led by local storytellers. That
