MATOBO NATIONAL PARK – a World
Heritage Site
Sited in the south east of Zimbabwe near Bulawayo and covering 44,500 hectares, Matobo is again an IPZ for black and white rhinos and is also known for its 3,000-year-old rock art, dramatic landscapes and cultural sites arising from its location in the Matobos Hills - regarded as the seat of ancestral spirits in Southern Africa.
As well as the rhino, Matobo is home to Zimbabwe’s largest concentration of leopard and diverse bird life including a concentration of black eagles - exclusive lodges include Fish Eagle, Black Eagle, Imbila and the Rhodes Hall conference facility can cater for up to 30 delegates, with basic IT support.
Numerous cultural and historical sites, the unique balancing rock features, curio souvenir sales crafted by the local communities around the park, plus a quiet and unpolluted environment make the park an excellent stopover for visitors in transit to Hwange and Victoria Falls.
GONAREZHOU NATIONAL PARK
In the extreme south east of Zimbabwe, Gonarezhou National Park is the second largest in the country and covers more than 5,000 sq km – its name translates as “place of many elephants” and the park is renowned for its rugged landscape while its three rivers give rise to natural pools and oases that attract up to 400 different bird species.
It is part of a massive Pan-African Park that includes South Africa’s Kruger National Park and Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park – and the area is set to become one of the world’s major “peace parks” dedicated to conservation, biodiversity and the economic development of surrounding local communities while re-establishing historical animal migration routes and fragile regional ecosystems.
