The Okavango’s protection is undertaken using a high cost, low impact tourism policy
outside of the Moremi Game Reserve. This means that large swathes of land are protected
with small lodges and camps paying high land fees. In terms of the delta, lodge rooms are
limited and prices can be quite high. Maun itself is perfect and one can do helicopter rides
over the Okavango as well as day trip mokoro rides along one of the many rivers relatively
close by. Either way, the Okavango is a much sort after attraction for the country.
The capital, Gaborone, has easy access to facilitate MICE groups. Daily flights to and
from Johannesburg coupled with a city with all its modern offerings bids well for MICE
groups indeed. Recently International Airlines are flying direct to Gaborone furthering
Botswana’s goals in this segment of the tourism sector. And Gaborone in turn is well
connected to the great destinations of the Okavango Delta, the Chobe River and Victoria
Falls.
Further options and consideration for Gaborone is the city’s connectivity to the Tuli
Block on the eastern side of Botswana. This wildlife paradise boasts incredible wildlife and
lodges and its picturesque Mashatu trees and sand rivers make for a stunning destination.
One can connect from the capital however, there are daily direct flights from Lanseria
Airport in Johannesburg. Closer to the city itself is the Madikwe Game Reserve for
those wanting to combine Gaborone with a wildlife experience. And last but not least,
Mokolodi just outside the capital also caters for meetings and incentives.
All in all, Botswana is well placed and geared for hosting MICE groups and with a
range of destinations and products to suite small to medium sized groups of travelers
visiting the country. The country boasts excellent standards in both service and cuisine.
