DEVELOPMENT PROCESS:
There are two parts to our player Development Process: Train and Game.
We are a highly technical skill development club focusing on getting a very high number of quality touches in training in order to deliver a highly possessive style of play in games.
We take our training focus onto the game field where we track number of passes, passes completed, passing in attacking half, defending half and arrive and a growth model to help players and teams truly understand where they are piping and where they need more work.
1. TRAIN:
Through standard technical sets, we deliver between 800 - 1,300 touches per training session. Most clubs will get 50% of that number at best.
Look at most other club sessions after the first 20 minutes, you’ll see 4v4 and 5v5 sets, dramatically reducing the number of touches a player will get. Not here.
The 2018/19 Selects Training Plan involves:
1. TECHNICAL work such as passing, receiving, dribbling, pop-off, etc...
All things that sheer repetition helps increase execution rate.
100%
2. TACTICAL work like front-foot/back-foot, defensive and attacking shape,
looping, flat and check runs and set pieces. Things that repetition, review
and analysis helps increase execution rate. 60% Our Technical and Tactical development has both both Static and Dynamic 40% development progressions.

2. GAME:
What you do in training...
We track possession to make sure we are delivering passes - often at
our own demise at first. From u9 - u12, we will be beaten badly as
other teams rack up goals coming from one or two strong, fast,
talented players. However, by tracking our commitment to possession and executing our passes, by 13 and 14, we are commanding 60% - 70% of
the possession as 100% of our players contribute to our success. By 15 and 16, player roles become more defined and our ability to focus
effort and “winning” becomes easier.
We hear other clubs talk about their quality. We just have not seen it. We’ve seen talent and have lost to speed at times. But true quality takes time and effort most are unwilling to put in.

TRAINING UPDATE :
Jan 13, 2018
In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.
We have begun our “dynamic” possession development phase while continuing to work on front foot/back foot “communication” with teammates. “Communication?!?” Yes, communication. Front 1. foot = “we’re going forward!” Back foot = “we’re going back”.
BIG STUFF
That said...DO NOT BE FRUSTRATED DURING THIS STAGE OF OUR DEVELOPMENT. To date, most everything has been laid out and defined. Our technical sets have been pretty “static” (still, not a lot of motion). Now, situations are changing, space is moving, things seem less predictable.
We say “seem” less predictable because, as chaotic as the moving space may be, it is actually still
fairly predictable. Because, as we learned over the last couple sessions, how we defend can make opponents attacking more predictable.
3.
Principles of good defending include: (1) Ball moves, we move. Quickly close gap as opponent
receives ball to force their head down and pressure play to increase mistakes; (2) Hands on. Reach
out and touch opponents; (3) Angle in/Angle out. Take an angle in to steer opponent and use an
angle out to separate them from the ball; (4) First chance, cut off players space and disconnect them
from that ball. Above all, be controlled in your defending, but be strong. Win back early.
When working in pairs: (1) Always communicate, deterring who has ball and who’s got loose players; (2) Keep opponent in front of you; (3) Whenever they turn their back, have a poor first touch or allow too much space between ball, step in hard and quickly to win ball.
4. ATTITUDE:
Keep a strong, positive and supportive attitude at training. Value teammates. Value effort.
We will increase from our current F1 fitness level to an F2. We increased intensity today as a small intro to the next level. Please do not fear fitness - EMBRACE IT! It is the single most missed thing athletes state about training. As much as they complain when doing it, the fitness makes you feel healthy, makes you feel strong and separates you from average, big time. It is empowering.
NEXT UP: (1) High-Low play (started today); (2) Cover shape - tactical defending structure; (3) More lane changing.
* We are posting the Selects winter training plan with goals and projected data in TeamSnap Selects folder.
DYNAMIC MOVEMENT DEFENDING 101 FITNESS PROGRESS
- Deepak Chopra
As we get this concept down, how our teammate receives a ball tells us what she is planning to do
so we can react accordingly - and without waiting. This increases our speed of play and connects us
all on a somewhat “secret” level on the field. .
studying so you can be available Dynamic means motion, moving; not still. Dynamic play has us changing lanes, stretching space,
popping-off, checking shoulders to see if we’re in the best spot. It’s much more complex and
requires physical execution and mental processing (thinking) that will deeply challenge skill sets.

“This is No Ordinary Soccer Club You’re Dealing With.”TM
The BLAST training process is methodical and takes time to truly cultivate the best results. May seen “corny” (ha-ha, get it?!) but the message is, building something, building anything valuable takes time. It is not magic, but is a result of hard work, high effort and a dedication to being the absolute best you can be.
1. Planting the seeds...
Soccer perspective: 100% Technical
- Receive balls across our bodies “block & play”) - Play The Way you Face. (no turn)
- Receive with one foot, play with the other.
- Keep ball under our “chicken wings.”
All things start with a well planted seed, at the right depth, in the right environment, nurtured by people who care. We cannot rush growth. Through discipline and repetition raw seeds will grow into healthy stalks.
2. Watering the field
Soccer perspective: 99% Technical
- Need to (water) train players evenly.
- Need players at training to receive water.
- Train in the right amounts.
- Truly monitor growth to know water levels.
Planted seeds need to be watered regularly. A measured amount of “water” is used to keep things growing. Too much and the plant gets flooded. Too little it does not grow. Each seed needs to be getting its share.
3. Sprouting seeds...
Soccer perspective: 80% Technical/20% Tactical
- Old“Bad” habits give way to new “proper” ones.
- Introduce never-heard-before information.
- Demonstrate the “why's" for the skills we develop. - Allow time/space to fail (break) to build stronger.
Each “sprout” represents a new idea, a new concept. Our “building block” method builds skill sets off each other. We cannot build complexity until basics are established. You cannot have “leaves” without “branches.”
4. Growing taller...
Soccer perspective: 60% Technical/40% Tactical
- Increased demands strengthen growth.
- Faster pace, eventually increases instincts.
- Reliable technical skills allow for tactical growth. - Tactical soccer begins to make sense.
Once vulnerable sprouts now begin to strengthen. Roots are firmly secured. Broader, bigger leaves take in more nutrition from the sun and rain. These growing, stabilizing stalks are more capable of withstanding tougher elements.
5. Developing a healthy crop...
Soccer perspective:
New growth comes with new challenges. Managing internal stresses (hydration) or external forces (infestations) all impact growth. Added nutrients and “insecticides” help keep both internal and external elements from limiting growth.
- Other clubs seemingly more successful.
- Losing small battles to win bigger wars.
- Not listening to doubters casting shadows. - Truly invest, sacrifice and commit.
6. Harvest time...
Soccer perspective: 50% Technical/50% Tactical
- You discover what you have learned is so much more than what others are still learning.
A lot of time goes into developing strong, healthy stalks that survive rough weather, drought and even its share of infection. Over time a quality crop sits proudly in a field. One that can be replanted the next year, to begin the process all over again.
- You learn just what you are capable of, and bring it forward into the next season.
