Triona Design is a family run Donegal Tweed business. The business is based in the
small town of Ardara, Co. Donegal and it is run by the Mulhern family who have a
history of handwoven tweed that goes back generations.
Denis Mulhern is a fifth generation weaver, he grew up with the craft all his life. For
him it was a natural progression to turn a craft that he loved into a business. He
bought the building where Triona is housed today in 1985 and set up the business
with his wife Anne. Today their two daughters, Catriona and Patricia, also have active
roles in the day to day running of the business.
The business grew over the years and expanded in 1992 when it became a Failte Ire-
land approved Donegal Tweed Visitors Center. The business is based on making tradi-
tional Donegal tweed on the old original looms instore while then tailoring the fabric
in the latest trends and styles for up to the minute fashions.
A visit to Triona Design is a unique experience, offering all visitors a full guided tour of
the history of the weaving, a look at where the weavers are working at the looms and
spinning wheel, a friendly chat with the weavers themselves and a look at the finished
garments, a full insight into the process from fleece to fashion.
Triona stock a large range of ladies & gents tweed fashions, a huge collection of knit-
wear, handcrafted Irish jewellery and they also carry a wide range of accessories and
gifts.
