Scope of Microbiology
• Fungi (singular: fungus)
– Many (such as yeasts and some molds) are single-celled microorganisms
– Some (mushrooms) are multicellular macroscopic organisms
– Have cell nucleus and intracellular structures
– All fungi absorb ready-made nutrients from the environment
• Protozoa
– Single-celled microscopuc organisms with at least one nucleus and numerous
intracellular structures
– Few species of amoebae are visible with the naked eye
– Most protozoa obtain food by engulfing or ingesting smaller microorganisms
