Microorganisms as cells
• The cell is the fundamental unit of all living matter
– Each cell is isolated from other cells by a cell membrane
(also a cell wall in certain cells)
– Inside the cell membrane are various structures and
biochemicals that enable the cell to function
• Cells differ from inanimate objects
– All cells show metabolism, reproduction, differentiation,
communication, movement and evolution
