P. 4

Dear Members, again – with the help of Jane and Amber – I have the privilege of compiling and editing another issue of our College’s Gazette.
Whenever a new issue is due, I marvel at how rapidly the events in the world have changed. Just when we are tentatively venturing out of COVID-19, the unprecedented flooding along the Australian eastern coast forces us to consider again the implications of the climate crises. And who would have thought another war in Europe would occur in our lifetimes? – also with worldwide repercussions. It is then of no surprise that Tim Wilcox postulates on the effect of this stress on perfusionists by reduced PIRs reporting worldwide.
With the demands on healthcare inexorably rising in an environment of scarcer resources, the challenges of healthcare funding were addressed in the AHPA Policy Symposium, held in October – that was attended and reported by Alison Horton.
Despite these challenges, I encourage members to bravely venture forth and consider attending the Perfusion Downunder meeting in Queenstown this August, as well as 3SCTS in Cairns in November. These meetings will be an opportunity for us to regroup, reassess and plan for the future.
On a lighter note, the Gazette has a new regular feature – perfusionist under the spotlight. Perfusionists from our professional community, especially students or new graduates, will be introduced and interviewed. Enjoy getting to know your colleagues, or even future boss!
Our feature articles are dominated by New Zealand. Jenny Jeng, from Auckland City Hospital, has submitted an excellent paper on embolic load comparisons of two strategies for proximal anastomosis during CABG, to accompany her Syd Yarrow prize winning talk at the recent ASM. The Wellington Regional Hospital has James Holder and John Fitzgerald’s extensive review on considerations when performing CPB on the pregnant patient – so comprehensive that I warrant many of us will be compelled to update our unit’s protocols.
A New Zealand - Australian collaboration concerning CPB associated renal injury in patients refusing blood transfusions is reprinted - courtesy of Perfusion. This article by Tim, Richard and Rob again showcases to the world the depth of talent we have in the Antipodes.
We also get to learn more of the goings-on in the Antipodes most southern unit – Dunedin, NZ, and at Westmead, the geographical centre of Sydney.
And finally, to stimulate the brain, there is another of Sreeni’s famous challenging multiple-choice questions. My crossword may also while away some time.
Again, this issue comes with the wonderful support from the business sector; hopefully the advertisements will encourage you to explore the options out there.
As a postscript, this Gazette issue will be the last to be printed. Future issues will be in an E-publication booklet format alone. This will open up some new and exciting features to engage our perfusionist audience. Let us embrace the future!
