P. 7
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to 2022, hopefully a more predictable year than the last two!
The back end of last year and the start of this year have been interesting for the Board. We have farewelled Clarke and Annette and welcomed two new Board members – Wendy Saad Salib from the Alfred Hospital and Patrick O’Neill from Perfusion Services, both in Melbourne. They are both very passionate about the education of perfusionists in our region and have a wealth of experience and fresh perspectives to offer that have already been greatly appreciated. Both Wendy and Pat are working their way into their new roles on the Board and will be co-jointly responsible for the Overseas Trained Perfusionist (OTP) program. Updates and efficiencies have already been made and it’s been great to see their enthusiasm for the project.
We are excited to announce six newly qualified perfusionists have gained their CCP (ANZ) since my last update – Jenny Jeng, Nicole Tysoe, Rose Belbin, Neesha Ghedia, Justine Proctor and James Campbell. We congratulate them on passing their final exams! The past two years have presented many challenges for our students, with severe limitations to experiences, such as visits to other units, national or international conferences, and general involvement with various workplace events. The adaptability and resilience of our students has been remarkable, and they will take these important skills into their careers as clinicians in complex environments.
The final intake for the SCiCP course occurred in February, with a total of 14 students currently enrolled and on their way to gaining their CCP (ANZ). Ghaz has been working on streamlining operations, tightening up frameworks, and adding extra touch points for students to enable communication between them and the Board. We envisage the next two years to be valuable for our students and they get the support they need from our local perfusion community. Casey, in her role as Student Liaison (and Board secretary), has been continuing to promote collaboration and mentorship between senior perfusionists and trainees. We encourage anyone who is interested in mentoring to contact the Board, as this is a very enriching way to share experience and wisdom with future generations of perfusionists.
The MUSCs Master of Science in Extra Corporeal Science (MS-ECS) course is due to commence in September this year, with five students already accepted from our region. It has been a very steep learning curve for all involved to understand and
develop the process of entry and communicating this with all stakeholders. Alex has had a busy time working with MUSC to advocate for our future students and ensure the process is regularly tweaked as hurdles are navigated. The College website contains a new page where the stepwise process to having ones’ tertiary qualifications assessed for eligibility into the Master’s program can be found. A reminder that the cut- off date for entry into the September course is March 31st, applications after this date will be deferred until 2023. If a unit is contemplating hiring a trainee, it is advised that they ensure all preferred applicants meet the entry criteria and have their qualifications assessed by MUSC directly, to ensure they will be accepted into the course prior to employment. Please contact the Board or Admin if you have any questions regarding this, we’d be happy to help make the recruitment process as easy as possible for you.
The Autotransfusion course is mid-way through the first term for the year, coordinated by Adriano Luongo. The online LMS (Moodle) is running well, with positive feedback from students so far. Efficiencies have been made in the enrolment and invoicing processes and making the course simpler to administer. Ideas to enhance interactivity for the students will be implemented over the coming year.
Now that borders are reopening, we’ve had a lot of enquiries from overseas trained perfusionists who are interested in pursuing work in our region. We understand there have been difficulties filling locum or temporary positions due to workforce shortages, so hopefully some of our highly experienced overseas colleagues can join us and help fill the void.
You would have received an email regarding recertification, please do your best to submit on time, prior to 31st May. If you have not been able to attain the required points and need to apply for hardship, please contact abcpsec@anzcp.org as soon as possible so your individual situation can be discussed.
As you can see, the Board have been busy, working to create value for our profession in the areas of education and credentialling. The following year will be exciting, as we share the task of education with our international affiliates while continuing to develop our processes at home.
