AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND WELCOMES THE NEW ERA OF PERFUSION
LivaNova
With technology advancements and an increased focus on patient outcomes, perfusion and the role of perfusionists is changing. Perfusionists are no longer ‘just operators’, they are coming to the forefront of technology innovation and putting patients at the centre of this evolution.
LivaNova, has launched the EssenzTM Perfusion System in Australia and New Zealand following a rollout in other markets globally. The arrival of state-of-the-art perfusion system to Australia and New Zealand marks, what the company calls “The New Era of Perfusion”.
The New Era is driven by unprecedented co-creation and collaboration between the medical technology industry and perfusionists. At the Essenz Perfusion System launch events in Sydney and Melbourne, LivaNova revealed that over 300 perfusionists worldwide had been involved in every step of the Essenz’ design, development and evaluation processes.
Chiara Orsini, Global Essenz Launch Director at LivaNova, made a special appearance at the launch events to introduce LivaNova user-centric design process and elaborate on the four pillars of the new system – safety, intuitiveness, efficiency and patient-tailored care – that will help to drive greater efficiency and help improve surgical outcomes.
“This new perfusion system is based on decades of trusted partnership and collaboration with hundreds of perfusionists globally. This approach to innovation, with collaboration at its heart, ensures that we prioritise features that can deliver the most value to perfusionists,” said Ms Orsini.
The launch was an opportunity for Australian perfusionists to hear from international guest speakers who shared their insights on how the reinvention of heart-lung machines (HLMs) can tailor and improve patient care, including real-world case studies.
Ed Overdevest, Clinical Perfusionist at Catharina Hospital in Netherlands, was part of the first Essenz clinical experience in the world, performing a coronary artery bypass procedure on an adult patient. In his reflections, he called out the outstanding intuitiveness
and ease of use, as well as improved efficiency and ergonomics that made this first experience a success. Since the first use, Catharina Hospital purchased seven Essenz Perfusion Systems, commenting that ‘they are ready for the future’.
The renowned, Professor Marco Ranucci from San Donato Hospital, Italy, spoke at the launch events about the evolution of perfusion data in reducing the incidence of acute kidney injury in cardiac surgery. Professor Ranucci unveiled a novel predictive tool for anticipating acute kidney injury associated with cardiac issues, emphasizing the utilization of data from the Essenz Patient Monitor that supported validation of the algorithms used in the predictive model.
The Essenz Patient Monitor offers an intuitive user interface and continuously records and displays data and events together to assist the perfusionist throughout a procedure. Data is automatically and seamlessly transferred, minimising manual data entry and freeing up valuable time for the perfusionist in the operating room.
The Essenz Perfusion System can be adapted to the individual needs of patients (adult and paediatric), workflows and users. It features an ergonomic design, including advanced cable management and a mast- mounted design that minimises distractions and keeps the area clean and hygienic. The innovative cockpit provides one central view to control the device and check all perfusion and patient parameters.
In addition, the Essenz Perfusion System is backed by a responsive service team of local, dedicated engineers, along with a global support centre to address any needs.
Donna Tymensen, Country Director, LivaNova Australia and New Zealand, says launch of the Essenz Perfusion System is an important historical milestone for LivaNova in Australia.
“It’s been an honour to have our special guests, over 70 Australian and New Zealand perfusionist, to share this journey with us. The LivaNova team was delighted to connect with them, hear their feedback and see their reactions to our newest product,” said Ms Tymensen.
