ANZBP BOARD REPORT – OCTOBER 2023
Dear colleagues,
The end of 2023 is fast approaching and upon reflection, it’s been a very productive and exciting last 6 months from the Boards’ point of view, with 2023 proving to be one of the biggest in my 6-year tenure on the board. Firstly, I would like to thank my fellow Board members for their dedication and volunteering their precious time to manage the many projects that are tasked to us. We have achieved a lot this year, from finalising the very demanding NASRHP membership application, where approximately a dozen policies and procedures needed to be developed and published, to achieving endorsement for the creation of a Masters of Perfusion course at Western Sydney University (WSU)!
As detailed in a recent update to the membership, after a year of meetings, stakeholder engagement, negotiations, and presentations to university committees, we have been given support and endorsement to commence the development of a Master in Cardiovascular Perfusion at WSU. The university and the Board have appointed a Course Development Team (CDT), consisting of three members of our College – Annette Mazzone, PhD (SA), Casey Edwards (NSW), and Elena Dosouto (NZ) – who will work in close collaboration to collate and refine course material over the next four months to meet the expectations of the university. Work has already begun, and it is evident that the team is motivated to produce exceptional material, with the guidance and support of myself, the board, the university, and an External Advisory Committee (EAC) made up of members of our perfusion community. If you would like to be a part of the EAC, please contact me. There are still a number of university committees that the course has to progress through as it takes shape, however, we are confident and hopeful we will achieve our vision of a domestic Masters course.
There has been a significant overhaul of many of the College policies and documents, thanks to the efforts of the Board and Executive, as we applied for full membership with NASRHP. This was a huge task, to say the least, and we are very proud to have achieved the submission deadline. Please make yourselves familiar with the new policies on the College website, as many of them have changed, including the OTP, certification and recency and resumption of practice policies. We now have several online portals to streamline applications and document submissions, notably, an OTP portal and a trainee registration portal. The board request that all trainees register via this portal and all supervisors submit the trainee evaluations here as well. Please make yourselves
familiar with these new systems and get in touch with the Board if you need any assistance navigating these.
Enrolments for the autotransfusion course, facilitated by Keith Adkins, remain strong and revenue from the autotransfusion course continues to be the most significant amount of revenue for the College. Minor improvements continue to be made to the course to ensure it is running as efficiently as possible. We are currently looking at developing various other courses on the back of the Learning Management System (LMS) that was established, which will not only increase the reach of the Board as an education provider but also bring a substantial amount of annual recurring revenue to the College.
We have four students who are in the final stages of the SCiCP course and will be sitting CCP exams within the next 6 months. We also have 9 students who are completing the MUSC course, with the first cohort of 4 students due to finish mid-next year. We wish you all the best in your final months and look forward to welcoming you as Fellows of the College upon successful completion of your training! The transition period between courses has been relatively smooth with Ghaz managing the SCiCP students, and our contacts at MUSC being helpful with any queries we have. Ghaz has now stepped down from the Board after this years’ AGM, concluding three successful years guiding our students through their traineeships during a very eventful time in his life – finishing off his PhD and with the demands of a young family. Thank you Ghaz for your passion for education, we hope you enjoy some relaxation after a busy past few years.
We have two positions up for nomination this year and look forward to welcoming two new members to the Board. We are excited to collaborate with the incoming members and having a productive 2024, working towards more improvements in education and credentialling for our community.
Warm regards,
Jessica Cantrick, Chair ANZBP Members:
